Bar B Q Plaza
Bro wanted to try Bar B Q Plaza after I picked him from school last Wednesday. There were 2 lunch sets, the beef or pork. Not a beefy person, I took the pork.
The redness of it really put me off. Kinda felt horrified seeing how raw it was. That was the only time I considered becoming a vegan. To even think of it is no easy task for someone who made a statement “I don’t like green vegetables”. Laugh all you want at the metaphor but there are vegetables that aren’t green. Guess I’m not used to seeing meat before it is cooked. Even after that was cooked, I felt so yuckish putting it into my mouth. I couldn’t finish it, felt disgusted. Come to think of it, I’m not really a meat person. I’d feel geli if there was too much meat in my mouth. Even with chicken, I sometimes think ‘this used to run around and fly’, and then every chew seemed to be biting into something that flew and ran. Urgh..
But what am I to eat? As mentioned above, I’m not a vege person and I’m too lazy to eat fish, my dad’s no longer around to pick out the bones for me. So..err.. I’m still fat anyway. No conclusion here, whack la!
Btw, BAR B Q Plaza sucked. One of the girlfriends said so too. The meat not marinated, it had to be dipped into the barbeque sauce which was sweet like chee cheong fun sauce. No, thank you. The meat and seafood didn’t really feel cooked too..urgh..
Old Town Kopitiam
Driving around undecided what to have for dinner one night, we ended up there. They listed it as “Ipoh Hor Fun”, so I thought I’d give them another chance. The last time, they ran out of hor fun and gave me mihun instead. Ipoh mihun? Come on.
When it came, ooh la la..
The closest I can get to the real thing. This is actually only the 2nd time I’ve seen something like this, the oil in the soup, prawns and chives. Why is it so hard to replicate Ipoh Hor Fun?? This soup was a tad too murky for me though, it’s not supposed to be like that.
The first few mouthfuls were good! After that, had a yucky feeling again and struggled to the end. Couldn’t even bear to finish the last few strands of hor fun. The best is still the one in Seaview coffeeshop, Subang SS15 I think. Prawns, chives and tastiness. Not bland soup and shredded fibrous chicken. Never ever call that Ipoh hor fun, cos it isn’t.
Hakka Recipe
Went with James to his client’s place cos boss wanted one of us to tag along. MS said she might have something, so I had to go despite being burnt and black. We spotted Hakka Recipe on our way there, and there was where we went for lunch after we were done. Was kinda excited cos I’m Hakka!! And so was James, and 2 Hakkas going to Hakka Recipe for lunch! I’m so proud of my heritage =) Though I don’t speak the dialect =)
Found the décor nice but somehow don’t look spectacular in the pics. I liked the antique-looking teak-looking chairs very much, in fact we liked it so much that we berebut wanna sit on it til we ended up sitting side by side =D Hey, I don’t even sit side by side with my boyfriend when we are eating =D No choice la, Hakka chairs eh! Hahahaha.
The interior. The antique-looking teak-looking chairs are against the wall, if you can see that.
Another part of the interior.
Some calligraphy that James said is meant to be read horizontally despite being placed vertically. The first 3 words meant something like ‘same type of people’? Yes, that’s what we are!
This is one person who would readily pose if you ask ‘You want to take picture or not?’ Correct me if I’m wrong but usually if people wanna take your pic, there would be some form of resistance. This wasn’t even a wanting-to-take; it was a question which was answered almost immediately with a smile.
Me lor, burnt already but still wanna take a pic. Self snapped cos too shy to have James take my pic, especially in an eatery which makes me look like a yau kooi jakun.
The recommended dishes were ginger chicken rice with egg and fried pork rice with egg. James ordered the ginger chicken but I didn’t want to have the pork, so he agreed to have the pork so we won’t be having the same thing. So, here’s how it looks like..
From the name itself and the pics, there isn’t anything spectacular about it. Think I’ve had those before in fact, just that I didn’t know they were Hakka =D James wanted to try mine, so I might as well try his and yeah, nothing spectacular. But it’s Hakka! Haha.
Eh, this James is pure Hakka you know. He even has all these dishes at home, but he still wanted to try another’s cooking. I think Hakkas aren’t exactly common, and to find a pure one is even rarer! So Hakka-yin wan =) And we actually spent 1 hour at the client's place, 2 hours for lunch and at The Curve hahaha. Next time I wanna melesap to some mall first before coming back to the office la =D
There was also a sudden interest in juice and fresh milk, supposedly wanna lead a healthy life but they were actually bought due to thirst while shopping. Ok, so juice is supposed to be healthy, it gives the impression that it is healthy but I guess for every good, there is a bad. The same goes with vice versa. Cos there is sugar and colouring in there. Not so much though, cos Timmy drinks those juice and he calculates fat and sugar content. Don’t think they are that fresh as well despite ‘For any fresher, you have to peel it yourself’, whatever. So does the benefits of the juice outweigh the sugar, colouring and preservatives? Coincidentally while I was writing on this, Yahoo's feature article as you open the page was also on this.
Sing Hiong Eating House
We went to this place yesterday after bro's dental appointment, on his suggestion. Never seen any place called 'Eating House' before.
This pic is taken by my bro, thus it's partly covered as he has bad photographer hands, low levels of patience and low levels of tolerance for his snap-happy sister.
Despite the yuckiness of the pics, all the food were still gone! =D Looking at the pics now makes me wanna puke..
Ok, the main reason for going to that 'Eating House' was actually this.. my bro wanted to eat lut lut at the stall nearby. But even the lut lut stall was yucky. Urgh.. don't care, hantam la..
My mum whacked all the kerangs, all gone. My bro kept questioning her bout the the stench and the sight of all the blood. It sickens me too. Don't understand how could my colleague have kuey tiao soup with that kerang. Stinks! Even my mum the kerang fan don't get it, as well as the kuey tiao soup aunty.
With all the complaining I do about food, I’m not stick thin. Cos Timmy and I whacked a big plate of crabs and the dim sum buffet last weekend. And had a nice pizza at Piccolo Mondo on our weekday pakthor session. The Quattro Stagioni pizza was good. You never know what crap Pizza Hut’s been feeding you until you try some other pizza, even Domino's. So I call for a boycott on Pizza Hut! Any support?

And at the moment, I'm so happy cos my afternoon tuition class has been cancelled by the parents! So I can go marathon-ing in peaceand then pakthor! No need to rush home and no need to be the 'bad teacher' by cancelling class. Postponed classes for 3 weeks in a row already, and another in April for Genting. Was getting kinda worried but it was all gone when they asked me to come and apply for my teaching permit. They are getting me a permit! I'm a lovely teacher after all.. =P
Bout the marathon, no eye see. Why? Cos after all my determination and enthusiasm in one of my posts, I only went jogging twice. One of it was also during tkd training with the kids and was forced to =P May all the speed be with us! The strength, the stamina, the power and the wind too (blowing from my back ok)!

Eh girl, I'm a Hakka you know. Half anyway...
Authentic Ipoh hor fun? There's one very good one in front of Grace Church in Chi Liung. I don't know what's the shop's name anyway and its just one of the stalls la. Opposite Public bank I think?
Another would be at SS14 (the rows of shops opposite Metropolitan, Inti etc). I think the restaurant's name is "Ka Heong" which means hometown. Its really good there, and you can see its hor fun and not kuey teow. And the fat taugehs. Got nga choy kai (Taugeh + Steamed chicken) also.
I think these beat the one in Seaview =) I've tried la.. my years of studying around these areas. Haha!
And.. hakka food are real good food. Except for lui cha (green stuff with rice), I don't know how to appreciate that. My grandma's a hakka and she cooks real good hakka food. Maybe you'll like them too.
Enjoy! =)
Yeah I'm half Hakka too hahaha. Nvm la, quite authentic also =D
The Seaview one isn't that nice actually but the best I could find so far. Thanks for your recommendations! So far don't see much spectacularity with Hakka food and yeah, lui cha is erm.. green. Blended vegetable soup? No way!
Wah, all hakka yin here:) Me also, a Hakka! One of the famous Hakka dishes i like is the with yam, pork and groundnuts.
yah, the one opposite Public Bank is famous for its laksa and hor fun. Used to go there to tapau almost every weekend. Lots of people, my orders will usually come after ard 1 hr of waiting.
Let all the Hakka-rians (it is actually just Hakkas right? Haha) gather here! Anyone knows how to speak fluent Hakka or not? Teach me..
Okla, one day I will try that hor fun. Think Chen Hong's mum used to sell economy rice at that shop.
